Note: This post highlights women, including motherhood. A heads-up for those that are sensitive to the topic.
Do you remember the box-style TV? Or the shelves stacked high (or around like a halo) of VHS movies and DVDs?
A childhood memory that sticks with me is sitting down watching a movie with my family.
The 1995 film, Waiting to Exhale, became iconic: the ensemble cast, author Terry McMillian, and the film’s timeless R&B soundtrack. The movie portrayed women at your mother’s hair salon: fly, hip, and full of life stories.
Despite life pains and many heartaches, the film’s compelling story of friendship prevails. The “ladies night” scene, bashing lazy lovers, is still one of my favorite on-screen sisterhood moments.
To the team behind the upcoming Lee Daniels reboot, please take care of this one.
Woman. Mothers. Sisters. Friends.
This month’s content theme- womanhood and the relationships surrounding us. The stories that celebrate, and inspire.
Recommended Podcast Episodes
“Carry Him Shoulder High” by Mary Kate O’Flanagan
The Moth is one of my favorite storytelling podcasts and non-profits. A friend recommended this one and it’s been my go-to for a good story told by real people. Despite the cultural and gender traditions, Mary and her sisters did the unthinkable for women by carrying their father’s casket. Listen to Mary’s story or the full podcast episode featuring touching stories from women around the world.
And that’s how my father gave me back the only thing I need to walk through this Earth unafraid, my five sisters.
Episode one from Baby This is Keke Palmer
Have you listened to Keke Palmer’s new podcast?
The first episode to Keke’s podcast is an interview with Blac Chyna. The conversation is a highlight to owning your space as woman. Chyna is the top earner on Only Fans! This episode is a bit explicit.
Don’t Want to Talk About it with Simone and Journey
Mother and daughter duo, Simone and Journey, host the podcast, “Don’t Want to Talk About it”. In this episode sixteen year old Journey discusses 10 things that teens need to hear from their parents.
Two interesting stats about podcasts listeners:
At least half of podcast listeners across all age groups say learning is a major reason they listen to podcasts.1
56% of listeners age 12-34 are monthly podcast listeners.2
For Your Reading Break
Wash Day Diaries
Recently at the library I discovered a young adult graphic novel with a captivating cover of four women. A similar feel to the audience acclaimed HBO series, Insecure.
This short read with lively illustrations, by artist Robin Smith, would make a great gift or coffee table book. A love letter to Black culture and friends.
Currently Watching
In My Mother’s Garden
The documentary is an intimate collection of mother daughter relationships, and the ancestors that paved the way. The Array film with an impressive cast is now playing on Netflix.
Women on The Street on Instagram
Captioned as “lady to lady storytelling” this Instagram account captures stories of women in New York. The account (also on TikTok) was created in March and has close to 50,000 followers. I’m watching out for this account, it’s a really good concept for social media and is gaining some supporters.
